Promoting Fairtrade

Fairtrade Standards are designed to support the sustainable development of small producer organizations and agricultural workers in developing countries. The Fairtrade Standards incorporate a holistic blend of social, economic and environmental criteria. Traders are also covered by the standards, underscoring the commitments companies and businesses must make to contribute to sustainability in their supply chains and operations.

The Fairtrade Textile Standard is one component of the greater Fairtrade Textile Programme to facilitate change in textile supply chains and related business practices. This comprehensive approach engages manufacturers and workers in the supply chain to bring about better wages and working conditions and engages brands to commit to fair terms of trade.

How is Fairtrade
Making a Difference?

Fairtrade is a simple way to make a difference in the lives of the people who grow the things we love. They do this by making trade fair. Fairtrade is unique. They work with businesses, consumers and campaigners. Farmers and workers have an equal say in everything we do. Empowerment is at the core of what Fairtrade is. They have a vision: a world in which all producers can enjoy secure and sustainable livelihoods, fulfill their potential and decide on their future. Their mission is to connect disadvantaged farmers and workers with consumers, promote fairer trading conditions and empower farmers and workers to combat poverty, strengthen their position and take more control over their lives.

Why Adopt Organic Cotton Standards?

In addition to being one of the most widely grown crops in the world, ‘conventional cotton’ is also one of the most water and chemical-intensive. The crop and the entire process of growing ‘conventional cotton’ is laden with stigmas and rightly so, as fast fashion and consumer buying patterns have added tremendous pressure for quick and abundant supply.

The chemicals used have an extremely detrimental effect on the planet’s air, water, soil and health of the people involved in the process. Hundreds and thousands of cases have been reported on farmers succumbing to diseases directly attributed to these chemicals.

Adhering to the Global Organic Textile Standards

To counter the issues faced in growing conventional cotton, one of Malmo’s aims is to spread awareness of GOTS certified cotton. This is Organic Cotton that is not only grown sustainably, i.e. without the use of harmful chemicals but also covers the process of converting cotton into a finished product in the most social and ecological way. The aim of the standard is to define world-wide recognized requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.
